Becky Stevens Bio
Kansas City based artist Becky Stevens received her BFA in sculpture and design in 1986. She is a mixed media artist with a passion for fiber. She was taught how to create with a sewing machine as young child by her grandmother, a retired pattern cutter for Nelly Don. Her mother was an award-winning fiber artist who put Becky to work in her teens, helping to create crocheted sisal sculptural wall pieces. After graduating she taught as a substitute teacher for the Belton and Blue Springs school district. She spent several summers working for Access Arts, leading a team of artists, using art to help blind children interpret their environment.
Her community arts activism includes a seat on the board of the Kansas City Weavers Guild from 2006 -2016, a board member of Missouri Fiber Artists (MoFA) since 2013, a founding member of the Feltmakers Federation (regional group of felt artists) and the founder of Surface Design Master Classes for the Kansas City Weavers Guild. She is a member of Surface Design Association, Kansas City Artist Coalition, Missouri Fiber Artists, and the St Louis Artist Guild.
Becky has been in numerous juried shows receiving awards for her work in Kansas City, St Joseph, St Louis, New Jersey, and Denver, and has done numerous commissions. She has also lectured on natural dyes and textile practices. She has always worked to combine modern art thinking with centuries old textile techniques. Her current work is on the forefront of marrying ancient fiber arts practices with modern technologies; combining photography, digital printing, embroidery, encaustic, felting, and dye work on cloth.
